Malby & Co./Malby & Son, London. 1843 (Celestial Globe) and 1891(Terrestrial Globe). Hand-coloured engravings on cardboard spheres, brass meridian rings, mahogany stands. H. ca. 115 cm, globe's diam. ca. 46 cm (18 inch). Small damages and additions, one glass of a compass broken. Terrestrial globe in cartouche marked 'Malby's Terrestrial Globe Compiled from the Latest & most Authentic Sources including all the recent Geographical Discoveries, Manufactured and Published under the Supervision of the Society for the Diffusion on Useful Knowledge by Thos Malby & Son Map & Globe Sellers to the Admiralty, 37 Parker Street, Little Queen Street Holborn, London. Outside the cartouche: Jan. 1st, 1891; the celestial globe shows a similar cartouche, referring to the depicted constellation of the stars in 1850, dat. June 1st, 1843 and inscribed Engraved by Cha.s Malby. Both globes with full circle brass meridian with 4 x 90° graduation, finely engraved hour ring with 24-hour graduation, the horizon ring with indication of cardinal points, zodiac signs and degree divisions, mahogany stand with central baluster on 3 legs, between these a wooden compass box with compass cards and blued steel needles - Provenance: 2005 acquired from Iris Antique Globes and maps, Almen (NL); since then private collection, Northern Germany - Malby & Co, followed by Malby & Son, was a well-known British map and globe company in the 19th century, specializing in the production of high-quality terrestrial and celestial globes, maps and atlases. Malby & Son's globes were renowned for their accuracy and attention to detail and were used in schools, libraries and private homes for educational and decorative purposes. The globes were often decorated with intricate engravings and hand-painted details and mounted on ornate stands
