C. grew up in the Netherlands and studied at the Amsterdam Academy from 1940 to 1943. C. joined 1947 the artist movement Reflex with Karel Appel and Constant Nieuwenhuys. A year later, together with other Neo-Expressionists, they founded the group CoBrA - CoBrA stood for the capitals of the artists' countries of origin: Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. CoBrA's art was considered challenging and abstract - free of color and form tradition, surrealistic, expressive and experimental.
