S. learned to make the figures for the traditional Balinese shadow puppet theater as a child. He was one of the first Indonesian artists to come into contact with Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet and thus with European painting, making him a pioneer of modern Balinese painting. S. taught at the art academy in Yogyakarta from 1957-59. Mus.: Ubud, Amsterdam, Leiden.
