Provably around 1920. Oil/canvas. 49 x 69 cm. Lo. ri. sign. A. Gerbig, verso inscr. Abendsonne No. 308. - German landscape and figure painter. G. worked as a decorative painter until 1900, after which he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden from 1900-1902, along with Max Pechstein. He furthered his studies from 1904-1911at Königliche Kunstakademie in Dresden under G. Kuehl and travelled to the Netherlands, Italy and France during this time. From 1911-1912 G. taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf. The following year he was awarded the Villa Romana Prize and spent time in Florence. This was followed by his time as a soldier during World War I, travels to America, and the classification of his artworks as 'degenerate'. In 1945 G. was made honorary chairman of the Section Bildende Kunst of the Culture Association Suhl.
