Oil/canvas. 187 x 146,5 cm. Some rest., relined. Hector was one of the heroes of the Trojan War on the side of the Trojans. He says goodbye to his wife Andromache and his son Astyanax. - Provenance: Private collection Sweden - One of the important German painters of classicism from a large family of artists. He learned landscape painting from his two uncles Johann Heinrich Tischbein and Johann Jacob Tischbein in Hamburg, then history painting from Johann Dietrich Lilly. From 1777 he worked as a portrait painter at the Berlin court. In 1783-99 he lived in Rome and Naples and became friends with Goethe; the 1787 painting 'Goethe in the Campagna' is T.'s most famous work.
