Around 1626. Oil/canvas. 91,5 x 130 cm. On the stretcher old Christie's block stamp. Rest, relined. The panorama with forest, river and landscape view shows the typical style of Bril's late work. In addition to his son Cyriacus, several artists from Flanders also worked at times in Bril's studio in Rome. From one of these masters are possibly the figures. - Expertise: Luuk Pijl confirmed the attribution to Paul Bril and his workshop. - B. was the most influential Flemish landscape painter of the early 17th century. He was a pupil of D. Wortelmans in Antwerp before following his brother Mathijs to Rome around 1576. There he first established himself as a painter of frescoes in the Vatican, before he began to create panel paintings as well. Among his patrons were three popes and numerous cardinals. His paintings were also exported to Northern Europe, where they found many buyers and imitators; thus, Bril's style paved the way for the classical Baroque landscape painting of a Claude Lorrain.
