List of Artists Paul Bril

Paul Bril (Breda 1553 - Rom 1626, and studio) - Sell & Buy

B. was the most influential Flemish landscape painter of the early 17th century. He was a pupil of D. Wortelmans in Antwerp before following his brother Mathijs to Rome around 1576. There he first established himself as a painter of frescoes in the Vatican, before he began to create panel paintings as well. Among his patrons were three popes and numerous cardinals. His paintings were also exported to Northern Europe, where they found many buyers and imitators; thus, Bril's style paved the way for the classical Baroque landscape painting of a Claude Lorrain. Mus.: St. Petersburg (Hermitage), Paris (Louvre), Madrid (Prado), Berlin (Gem.-Gal.), Dresden (Gem.-Gal.) a. others. Lit.: AKL, Thieme-Becker, Bénézit a. others.
