M. studied at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums in Berlin and subsequently taught there himself before becoming an editor in 1916. From 1921 -29 he taught at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig. M. also created frescoes, wall hangings and book covers. Lit.: Thieme-Becker.
