R., the son of a miner, worked in agriculture and as a carpenter before attending the trade school in Zagreb until 1947. He began painting as an autodidact in the 1950s. After his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1963, he developed into one of the leading artists of naïve painting in Yugoslavia.
