1917. Bronze, brown patinated. The upright standing, plodding young bear prepares the large standing bear (cat. rais. 252). On the l. hind leg sign. 'A. Gaul' and num. copy 'III'. Bear: h. 24 cm, black marble base (min. chipped): h. 7,5 cm. - In the business books of Gal. Cassirer, 12 purchases and sales of this bear are documented. - Literature: Cat.rais. Gabler 251. - Provenance: Private coll. Kronberg/Ts. - Animal sculptor and graphic artist, studied first at the drawing academy in Hanau and later at the academy in Berlin, was a master pupil of Reinhold Begas and one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession, member of the Deutscher Werkbund, professor in 1908, most important German animal sculptor of his time.
