Around 480 BC, probably from the workshop of the Orchard painter. Mouth set off with a groove, ribbed handles, stepped foot, ring between foot and body between clay-ground grooves. Side A: Spear thrower. A naked athlete pushes back the throwing spear with his left hand, side B: Young man wrapped in a cloak to the left. Composed of several fragments, part of the vessel burnt red. H. 32 cm. - For attribution to the Orchard Painter, cf. an almost identically painted amphora in the British Museum (museum number 1864, 1007.100). - Provenance: Münzen und Medaillen A.G. Basel, without year (here as work of the Harrow painter); private collection Lower Franconia; afterwards by inheritance. -
