C. 480 BC. from the circle of the Antiphon Painter Drinking bowl with deep bowl basin, raised handles, foot plate and short shaft. Medallion frame with meander, interrupted by alternating quadrangles. In the centre depiction of a hoplitodromos: naked young athlete running, in the left a helmet without bush, the right forearm and the right hand are not preserved, next to the young man lies a round shield with shield mark and inscription. Assembled, a handle, pieces of the bowl with the r. hand and parts of the meander have been replaced. H. 9 cm, diam. with handles: 30,8 cm, without handles: 23,4 cm. - Similar bowl compositions by the Antiphon painter, who devoted himself above all to depictions of young athletes of the Attic aristocracy, can be found among others in the collections of antiquities in Athens, Munich, Paris, Baltimore, most recently also in the Christie's sale of 13 Oct 2020, lot 40. - Provenance: Acquired by Münzen und Medaillen AG Basel, 1971, Sonderliste N, lot 78 (original invoice); since 1971 in Franconian private collection; thereafter by inheritance. -
