H. received his first lessons from his cousin Emmanuel Hegenbarth. From 1908 he studied at the Dresden Academy with R. Müller and C. Bantzer, from 1912 as a master student of G. Kuehl. With A. Brömse at the Prague Academy he learned the graphic techniques. In 1947 he himself received a professorship at the Dresden Academy. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer.
