Mesopotamia, 3rd to 7th century AD. Red earthenware. Spiral incantation on the inside from the bottom to the rim, repeating bird motif on the outside. Spell bowls with incantations against demons and spirits were used by various religious communities and often buried under the floor as a means of protection. Rep. h. 8.5 cm, dm. 17 cm. - Provenance: Since 1970 in a North German private collection. -
