H. began studying commercial art in 1976 but moved to New York in 1978 where he soon became famous for his figures developed from stick figures painted on walls and posters. As early as 1982 he exhibited at the Documenta 7, in 1983 at the Whitney Biennale. Since 1985 he started painting canvases.
