China, 19th cent. (Qing-dynasty 1644-1911). White jade, carved. Naturalistic animal figure on a small plinth. L. 5,5 cm. - 'Hai ma', so-called Sea-horses, which fly over waves, are a popular motif on blue and white porcelain wares from the 15th century on. As a symbol for perseverance they were important for candidates for the traditional civil service.
