Hofstede de Groot: Beschreibendes und kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des XVII. Jhs., 1908, vol. II, p. 202, no. 714. - Provenance: Since at least 1857 in the collection John Henderson Esq., (1797-1878), London; auction Christie's London, 16-18.02.1882; Swedish noble collection. - One of the most important Dutch animal and landscape painters of the 17th cent. C. was taught painting in the studio of his father and thereafter travelled Waal and Rhine. Artists returned from Italy, in particular J. Both had a major impact on C. who adapted the light of a Southern sun for the depictions of his Dutch homeland. Mus.: St. Petersburg (Eremitage), Paris (Louvre), Amsterdam (Rijksmus.), London (Nat.
