Beer 1887, on the reverse inscribed 'Eingang eines Dorfes im russischen Gouvernement Smolensk' (near a Russian village in the Smolenks governorate) as well as label of gallery Commeter. - German painter, known for his depictions of rural Russian life. B. studied at the Städel art school in Frankfurt under J. Becker and E. von Steinle, thereafter in Antwerp and Paris. During the 1860s and 1870s he repeatedely dwelled in Russia.
