A rare Renaissance Andiron with Allegory of Africa

Northern Italy, Venice or Verona, 17th cent. Bronze with dark patina and black lacquer. An allegory of Africa is placed in the middle in the shape of a woman sitting on a lion accompanied by 2 torchbearing putti standing on a winged mythical creature. One torch and upper part lost. H. 28 cm, w. 49 cm, d. 13 cm. Two similar pieces exist in the Florence National Museum. - Literature: Exhibition cat. L'Italia splendida, Den Haag 1956, Cat. 220, fig. 38 und P.
