E. was pupil of Potsdam court painter G. Wegner a. took lessons with O. Achenbach in Düssedorf. Even for an artist he travelled unusually much, among others to Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Norway, Iceland a. England, he also visited the excavations of H. Schliemann in Troy.
