Voigt', matted a. framed under glass. - Literature: Cat. rais.: Lankheit 843 IV/V; Hoberg-Jansen 42 IV/VI. - German painter, draughtsman a. graphic artist, whose expressionist animal paintings are among the most famous artworks of the world. Since 1900 M. studied painting at the Munich academy under G. von Hackl a. W. von Diez. In 1903 he travelled France with a friend, as a consequence he didn't continue his studies in Munich. In 1910 he befriended with A. Macke, shortly after he met A. von Jawlensky a. G. Münter. Together with W. Kandinsky M. founded the 'Blauer Reiter' which despite of it's short existence developed into one of the most influential artist's group of the 20th cent. M. was now one of the most outstanding artists of the European avantgarde. As his friend Macke he was drafted for military service in 1914. He was killed near Verdun in 1916. His fundamental achievements for the development of abstract art were recognised when some of his artworks were exhibited at the Documanta I through III.
