M. was educated a. worked as sacristan, but studied painting in Moscow in the early 1870s, among others as pupil of V. Perov. 1885 to 1923 he exhibited with the 'Peredvishniki'. He was awarded a bronze medal at the World's fair in 1900. In 1909 he was elected member of the St. Petersburg academy. - Lit.: Bown.
