Japan, around 1900 (Meiji Period 1868-1912). Brown patinated bronze. Very finely cast figures with black and gold accentuated eyes. The graceful birds pictured in an expressive pose. One in movement, supported on the right leg, the left raised lightly as to do the next step. His head tilted slightly to one side and stretching his long beak up. The other depicted as his antagonist, standing firmly on one leg, the other hidden in the fluffed up feathers, he is drawing in his head and looking down. Sign. 'Kunitoshi' (國利). On elaborate burl wood base. H. 33,5 cm and 28 cm. - Prov.: from an old private collection, Hamburg.
