China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Polychrome and gold embroidery on cloth. Centre with vivid depiction of a four-clawed dragon with a flaming pearl over waves swirling around a cliff. Around the dragon mythical beasts and auspicious symbols between stylized clouds against a red ground. The upper area covered by an additional cloth inscribed 'Yuhuang shangdi' (玉皇上帝) in gold on a cobalt blue ground. Mounted to a wooden border. Traces of age. 90,5 x 114,5 cm. - Yuhuang, the Jade emperor, is one of the most important deities in Chinese mythology and the main daoist god. He is worshipped as the heavenly principle. The Chinese emperor was supposed to be the earthly son of the jade emperor.
