Japan, end 19th/beg. 20th cent. Softwood with polychrome and gold painting. Two demons and a woman's mask on rectangular plaque with colourful clouds on a gold ground. Sign. 'Tessai'. With tomobako (Holzbox), entitled 'noumen' (能面), sign. 'Tessai' and with artist's seal. - innovative sculptor, known for his netsuke and kiseruzutsu, made mostly from cypress wood, pine and boxwood. Many of his mask netsuke were faithful copies of the thirty-one Gigaku masks held in the Shoso-in depository in Nara, some dating from the Kamakura Period (1185-1333).
