China, Republic-period (1912-1949). Porcelain with polychrome paintin. At the front a large motif with 5 dogs after Giuseppe Castiglione (郎世宁) in an atmospheric winter landscape. Verso with 2 wanderers in front of a snowy mansion. Above an inscription, dat. 'bingxu' year (1946). Four-character Qianlong-mark. H. 38 cm. - Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) was an Italian Jesuit brother and became courtly painter of Emperor Qianlong. He created a unique painting style, a fusion of Chinese and European art (Chinese name: Lang Shining). Among his most famous works are fine paintings of Qianlong's hunting dogs, which are preserved in the Palace Museum Taipei, Taiwan. See: Avitabile, Vom Schatz der Drachen, London 1987, p. 150.
