U. studied first at the Munich academy under C. von Zimmermann a. J. Lange, thereafter in Weimar. After living shortly in Milan he travelled Norway on suggestion of the brothers Achenbach. Later he also travelled Scotland a. England, but Italy with subjects from Venice, the Adriatic sea a. Naples became most important form him.
