Ca. 1910. Oil/canvas. 58,5 x 75 cm. On the stretcher signature stamp. After Hauptmann began studying painting with Signac and Sérusier in Paris in 1903, among others, he began to develop his characteristic neo-impressionist early style. This was characterized by a paler palette until the 1910s. The similar design of the tablecloth and background creates a shimmering, indeterminate spatiality. The eye is caught by the fruit arranged rhythmically like notes on a line. - Landscape and figure painter, eldest son of the Nobel prize winner Gerhart Hauptmann. H. studied in Paris, under L. Corinth in Berlin and at the Weimar Academy. Among his friends were O. Müller, P. Signac and R. M. Rilke. H. was co-founder of the Freie Sezession Berlin.
