After serving in World War I, F. first studied art history until 1921, then painting at the Stuttgart Academy until 1925. In 1926 he moved to Dresden and from there he worked for the Juryfreie Kunstaustellung in Berlin. He had to give up a lectureship in Kassel under pressure from the National Socialists in 1933. In 1954 he settled in Marburg. Among the artists of the 'Lost Generation' F. is considered the most important colorist. Mus.: Dresden (Gem.-Gal.
