After first painting lessons with his grandfather, C. studied at the Academy in Naples from 1853. Already in 1863 King Victor Emmanuel II acquired one of his paintings. Later he was also active in Florence, Rome and Venice, where he further developed his initially somewhat idyllic, then socially engaged realism in the direction of French Impressionism.
