After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, M. studied at the Weißensee School of Art in Berlin and at the University of Greifswald from 1956-58. In 1993 he received the Caspar David Friedrich Prize, in 2005 the Culture Prize of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The artist lives and works on Usedom and in Berlin.
