Late 18th cent. Oil/canvas, 94 x 74,5 cm, min. dam., relined. - Painter, graphic artist and stage designer, main master of the French Rococo. B. studied under F. Lemoyne and J. Cars. Already in 1723 he won the Prix de Rome, in 1742 he became court painter of Louis XV. B. was also decorator of the Paris Opera and artistic director of the royal tapestry manufactory. His often erotically charged mythological depictions, portraits and above all his pastoral idylls embody the art of the French Rococo in an exemplary manner and had a lasting influence on the style of French painting.
