Oil/canvas, 81 x 131 cm, lo. ri. monogr. NG, rest. - Provenance: Swedish noble collection. - German history painter of Greek origin. G. studied at the Athens Polytechnic from 1854-1861. With the help of a travel scholarship he came to Germany and studied at the Munich academy from 1865, 1868-71 as a master pupil of Carl von Piloty. In 1888 he became a teacher at the Munich academy himself. G. also received monumental commissions such as the painting of the ceiling in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Kaiserslautern.
