Italy, 19th cent. Janus-headed god of sleep, backed by wings, depicted as a bust of an alert, graceful youth, with another sleeping face above. Min. dam. Total height 61 cm, w. 44.5 cm. - Italian sculptor, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, studied with Berthel Thorvaldsen in Rome and was appointed professor at the Academy in Florence in 1832. He created numerous funerary monuments and monumental sculptures, such as the statue of Michelangelo for one of the niches in the courtyard of the Uffizi. Lit.: Thieme/Becker 29/30, p. 427f.
