E. studied at the Dresden academy 1889-93, thereafter until 1896 at the Munich academy under P. Hoecker. He worked for the magazines 'Jugend' and 'Simplicissimus', in 1899 he was co-founder of the artist's group 'Die Scholle'. E. is a main exponent of neo-romantic painting around 1900.
