B. was taught painting in the studio of J. G. Dathan in Speyer. Since 1737 he was painter to the court in Mannheim, since 1744 he also created stage designs for the local theatre. In 1745 he travelled Switzerland, a journey that had a great impact on his repertoire. The sculptor to the Mannheim court P. Egell was one of his friends; his most important pupil was J. C. Seekatz. B.s works fuse Dutch landscape painting with rococo elements.
