Tibet, around 1900. Gilt bronze. Characteristical depiction of the buddhist deity of compassion standing on a lotus upon a stepped throne. The 11 heads of the bodhisattva arranged in triads above each other. Eight of his arms holding ritual objects in front of his body, the remaining stretched out and forming a halo around him. Base sealed. H. 51 cm. - Avalokiteshvara as the bodhisattva of universal compassion commited himself to help all beings to reach salvation. To accomplish this goal he was given 1000 arms and 11 heads by Amitabha.
