German animal painter, was trained as lithograph in Berlin 1871-74 a. took drawing lessen with C. Steffeck, 1877-80 he studied at the Berlin academy, as early as that time animals became his most important motifs, his first painting shown at the Berlin academy exhibition in 1881 was bought by crown prince Friedrich Wilhelm, this fist succes was followed by numerous international exhibitions a. awards, in 1883 he collaborated at A. v. Werner's panorama of the battle of Sedan, 1891-1911 he accompanied empror Wilhelm II to his hunting ground in East Prussia a. executed numerous commissions for the emperor, in 1896 F. became professor in Berlin, in 1898 he was among the founders of the Berlin secession. F. is one of the most important a. most popular animal painters of his time. He travelled widely, among others to Poland, Russia, the Arctis a.
