Johann Sperl (Buch/Nürnberg 1840 - Bad Aibling 1914) - Sell & Buy


German landscape and figure painter. S. trained as a lithographer in Nuremberg and attended drawing classes at the local arts and crafts school from 1858. From 1865 he studied at the Munich academy under H. Anschütz, in whose class he became friends with W. Leibl. He then became a master student, first with K. Th. von Piloty and then with A. von Ramberg. From 1878 he and his friend Leibl shared a studio, in which they also produced paintings signed by both artists. Sperl was buried next to Leibl in Würzburg at his own request.
