A. worked as actor and sailor before becoming a self-taught painter and photographer since 1888. Since 1892 he worked as photographer in Paris. He is an important chronicler of the architecture and street life of old Paris which earned him the nickname 'Balzac of camera' Mus.: New York (MoMA and Metrop.
