Mid 17th cent., oil/wood, 27 x 36 cm, on the reverse punch mark BW, some rest. - The punch mark with an mirror-inverted B in M is that of Melchior de Bout. During his Paris time Kalf sometimes used panels from de Bouts workshop. - One of the most eminent master of still life painting. K. was probably taught painting in the studios of H. G. Pot and W. P. Buytewech. Around 1640 he settled in Paris where he painted rustic interiors. Soon after he developed his magnificent table still life with refined lighting which earned him everlasting fame.
