F. was given his first painting lessons at the Edinburgh academy, later he continued his studies in the studio of E.-A. Carolus-Duran in Paris. In 1915 he became member of the Royal Academy in London. To be able to work plein-air also in winter he had himself constructed a mobile heatable hut. He predilection for sheep in snow-covered Scottish landscapes earned him the nicknam of 'Frozen Mutton Farquharson'
