Oil/canvas, 72 x 91,5 cm, lo. le. inscribed 'David Wilkie 1826', relined. - Scottish painter. As early as 1799 W. was admitted at the Edinburgh academy, since 1805 he continued his studies at the London academy. Soon he was very succesful; in 1811 he became member of the Royal academy, in 1823 he was appointed painter to the court. He travelled widely, among others to France, Holland, Italy a. Germany. Returning from the Middle East he died on a ship off Malta.
