Japan, Kano school, Edo-period (1603-1868). Ink/colour on silk. 3 vertical scroll paintings: 2 compositions ' bamboo and crane', 1 composition 'Jurôjin with turtle'. Sign. 'Chikanobu hitsu' (周信筆) and seal 'Josen sho' (如川章). Min. traces of age. Mounted on brocade (one with small losses). With inscribed wooden box. 105,5 x 43 cm. - The compositions 'Bamboo and crane' belong to the classic repertoire of the Kano school. Cranes symbolize a long life in East Asia und represent the principle of heaven in daoism. The turtle, which is shown at the feet of Jurôjin (寿老人), is the counterpart of the crane and represents the principle of earth. Jurôjin himself is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, the 'Shichi fukujin' (七福神), and is not only the diety of wisdom, but also embodies a long life.
