Although a well-known antifascist he was admitted to the Düsseldorf academy in 1936; he was taught by W. Heuser a. W. Schmurr. In 1942 he studio in Düsseldorf was bombed a. he settled in Schleswig-Holstein, where he became head o the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Künstlerbund in 1951. With G. Betterman a. others he founded the artist's group 'Gruppe 56'. In 1963 he taught at the Kunsthochschule Kiel.
