China, 17th/18th cent. Carved green-brown to black jade. Recumbent horse, the head turned backwards. Fine plastical design in naturalistic pose. H. 8 cm, l. 11 cm. - Jade-carvings in animal shape were used in the context of the scholar's desk, mostly as paperweights. The lively depiction of horses in jade was especially cultivated during the Ming-dynasty.
