China, probably late Eastern Zhou-dynasty (5th - 3rd cent. BC). Bronze with gold and silver inlays and turquoise decoration, heavily patinated in grey and brown, traces of soil adhesions. Globular vessel with cover on 3 tall legs, growing out of beasts' masks. Ring handles with Taotie masks at the side. Revolving decoration with ornamental metal inlays on a silver-wire spiral underground. Symmetrical decoration with circular and drop-shaped turquoise stones. H. 20 cm. - Compare the present piece to a pair of bronze bowls with gold-, silver- and turquoise inlays in the coll. Of the Miho Museum, Japan (Lit.: Newland, Miho Museum, South Wing, Kyoto 1997, p. 180). - Prov.: From a European collection.
