Russia, 18th cent. Wood carcasse overlaid with panels of walrus ivory pierced, engraved and partly coloured. Rectangular body with sloped lid thereon a figural scene. Kholmogory in province Arkhangelsk (Archangel) was during the 17th and 18th century famous for it"s artfully engravings of walrus ivory, bone and ivory. Already in the 18th cent. these objects were coveted collector"s items all over the world. (Comp. Halst, E., Modernes Scrimshaw, S.16f).- Sm. traces of use. H. 11,5 cm, L. 22,5 cm. T. 15,5 cm.
