Oil/canvas, 56 x 90 cm, sign. lo. ri. Beerwald - Hoboken, dam. - Built for HAPAG'S Hamburg-America line by Harland & Wolf in Belfast and launched in 1896 she entered HAPAG's Hamburg to New York service in 1897. With her enormous steerage capacity of more than 2800 passengers she was the biggest luxury liner at that time. When World War I began she was interned at Hoboken. 1917 she was seized by the US Government and after renamed Nansemond operated by the United States Shipping Board as a naval transport until 1919.
