G. first studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt with E. von Steinle, then in Munich with L. von Löfftz, but his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy with E. Dücker became formative. G. lived and worked in Hamburg for two years, took part in the Berlin Academy Exhibition from 1884 and also exhibited at the Munich Glass Palace from 1888. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit a. others.
